VOICE & SPEECH

VOICE TRAINING Class image.png

INSTRUCTOR: Susanne Sulby

PLATFORM: Zoom

FEE: $69 (+$20 admin fee)

DATE: Thursday, July 15th

TIME: 6pm - approx. 8pm via Zoom

AGE: 18 +

About This Class

This is a fast paced practical introduction to discovering your voice, becoming aware of habits that might keep you from being cast and building your overall awareness and confidence in the audition room, on set, stage, or in the boardroom. You will leave with new awareness and practical exercises to build your skills and overcome roadblocks.

We will teach fundamentals of voice and speech and will even have a chance to work individually with some actors to see the practical application.

Class exercises will include articulation and vowel pronunciation, rhythm and inflection, and learning about how tension affects performance and speech.

You are a working actor, but are you tending to your voice? Taking it for granted? Are you giving your voice the training it deserves? Expose your tendencies and identify regionalism (many have this!) in this highly supportive class environment.

Susanne is available for private coaching for acting and voice/speech.

INSTRUCTOR: Mel Mack, of NY's House Casting

PLATFORM: Zoom

FEE: $69

DATE: Monday, August 17th

TIME: 6pm - 8:30pm (includes a short break)

AGE: 18 +

MAX: 15 students

About This Class

Zoom auditions were definitely NOT part of any acting studio or college curriculum we know of, was it part of yours?

Yeah, we guessed not.

Zoom auditions will be the norm until at least the beginning of 2021, if not somehow become a part of how our industry will change forever.

And here’s the thing… every Casting Director expects you to know how to use Zoom to audition. It’s assumed that you’ll just “know best practices,” without having any direction - a camera is a camera, right?

Wrong.

Auditioning on Zoom is it’s own beast. You’re dealing with your own set up, having to wait on the inevitable camera-swap delay (or even worse, Gallery View), and ooof then your cat jumps in the frame. Of course.

Do you feel like you’re back in the old days of beginning to audition, again, where you’re just lacking confidence and feeling nervous because auditioning over Zoom has so many more variables than showing up for your appointment?

Not feeling confident about best practices in any audition space is going to be the first impression you make with the Casting Team and it makes you come off as amateur, rather than professional.

We know you’re a Pro, so we’re here to help!

Kathy has invited guest expert and CD, Mel Mack, to teach a Live Zoom Audition Technique workshop so you can stop sucking in your Zoom auditions and start booking again.

In the workshop, Mel will share:

  • #1 Mistake Actors are currently making in Zoom auditions

  • The Do’s and Don’t of Zoom Auditioning - everything you need to know

  • How to Schmooze the room --- without actually Schmoozing

  • Tips on how to set your at-home audition space with Zoom for the best “look”

  • Mock Live Zoom Audition

  • Q&A

Mel started as an Actor and then moved into Casting and has seen tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of auditions over the years. She has been supporting her community of Actors transition online. We are very excited to host her for this upcoming workshop!

Before the event, you will be emailed an easy link to this workshop allowing for quick entry to the Zoom workshop.

BONUS! Talent who joins the workshop will receive…

  • An additional discount code to use for any one of Mel’s upcoming classes

  • A PDF from Mel that includes tips from her book, “101 Acting Tips.”

About Mel Mack

Mel Mack is a Casting Director with over 20 years of experience in L.A. and New York. Currently at House Casting, Mel also is the Founder and Lead Instructor at the Mel Mack Acting Studio, the only acting studio run by a working Casting Director in New York.

As a former Actor, Mel knows what it’s like to be on both sides of the table, and how important it is to be now teaching all the cutting-edge techniques for rocking auditions. When she was acting full-time, she either felt like her auditions sucked (but she booked it) or they rocked (and she didn’t).

It wasn’t until she sat on the other side of the table she figured out what was wrong. Now, over 500,000 auditions later, she can pinpoint those problems, unique to every Actor, and uses the Studio as her platform to teach what she wished she knew then.

Mel’s goal is to help Actors feel more confident throughout the audition process, teaching techniques that are simple- yet fast and effective-  for making unique and memorable choices in the audition room.

melonie-mack-acting-studio-coach-los-ang

The Mel Mack Acting Studio focuses on comedy and comedy’s influence on drama to help Actors create dynamic choices with the script. On a deeper level, she teaches how to do this in “T.V. Time,” which helps Actors feel comfortable making adjustments on-the-fly that are specific to the Actor’s unique take on the Character.

Mel is the author of “101 Audition Tips”-quick hip pocket tips for the actor,” has been a featured expert writer/contributor for Backstage, a guest teacher at NYU Stone Street, Binghamton University, Kathy Wickline Casting, and Actors Connection, as well as a CSA panelist. She has also been a featured interview on podcasts such as Nothing Shines Like Dirt, The Boss Life Balance, and Lady Geek.

About This Class

I love Philly. I absolutely do. Part of what I love about Casting in Philadelphia is the tight-knit industry community. I also love that Philly Actors can live a relatively affordable lifestyle and still be very close to New York City. You pretty much have the opportunity to work in two major cities for the price of one.

That said, every city is different and there are important distinctions to make between how to book work here, versus there.

Let me tell you, with Casting being about 100% online, now is the time to be opening yourself up to the NYC market. You don’t even have to commute to audition or take class, so you can spend that saved-time doing more to create those relationships in NYC.

That’s why I’ve asked Mel Mack, Casting Director and founder of Mel Mack Acting Studio to host a masterclass for us on how to transition to the NYC-audition-circuit: Are You Ready for NYC?

In this Masterclass, Mel will break down for you:

  • What do you need to effectively market yourself in NYC?

  • What are the top 3 things NYC-based agents are looking for when they want to sign you?

  • How does Casting differ between Philly and NYC?

  • And more.

After over 25 years in Casting, and over a decade of that time in NYC, Mel is committed to giving you the tools you need to make the transition and expand your market into the Big Apple.

AGE: 18+

About This Class

We all know that acting is a really FUN business… however it is a BUSINESS! Many actors are in such a hurry to get started that they jump right in feet first.  However, it is important to remember that you are actually starting a business. There are simple, proven business strategies that are crucial for you to use, in order to achieve the kind of SUCCESS you are looking for in your acting career.

When I began my Full-time acting career 4 years ago, I started out like most actors by focusing on my craft. I took all the workshops and classes I could afford, and started submitting like crazy! But I never felt like I was getting enough accomplished for the work I was putting in.  So I restructured my day and went back to the strategies and tactics I used in my nearly 40 years of national award winning work in business management positions. These are just some of the critical items I began focusing on:

  • Motivation

  • Mindset

  • Organization

  • GOAL Setting

  • Legal Aspects of Running a Business

  • Agent/Manager vs Freelancing

Almost overnight, my career EXPLODED!  I TRIPLED my bookings, got TWICE as much accomplished in less time, and wound up having extra time on my hands every day!

Whether you plan on staying local or going global, this workshop focuses on those strategies and tactics to help you MAXIMIZE your acting career!

*You will also receive materials to continue to move forward with the strategies and tactics above!*

The smaller class size will allow for individualized focus and plenty of practice using teleprompter technology. You will also learn how to download free software and upload commercial and/or corporate scripts.

Testimonials for Intro to Teleprompter with Dave Thomas

Taking the Teleprompter Skills Workshop with Dave Thomas might be the smartest thing I've done in my 37-year television career. I learned about pacing, hitting the correct words, the definition of a triangle phrase, and how to conduct myself at an audition with confidence.  At the end of two hours, everybody in the class felt empowered.

- Steven K.

Oh my goodness! I had a HUGE breakthrough. Dave encouraged me to embrace my natural voice and once I did, boom! My pacing flowed better, along with my inflections and just my overall approach to bringing the copy to life. He created a fun and engaging experience and I felt super comfortable from the start.

- Unissa F.

I completed the teleprompter class with Dave Thomas yesterday, and I just wanted to tell you: it was a fantastic, worthwhile experience! Dave was insightful, knowledgeable, professional, engaging, and provided extremely useful feedback. In an industry filled with many expensive “training” programs that aren’t particularly helpful, yours stands out. Thank you for the opportunity!

About This Class

Hands-on attention is given to students looking to learn the skills of this quickly growing trade of hosting. Many acting jobs require a professional delivery of a spokesperson personality.  There is an abundance of work in the Philadelphia market for cable TV, podcasts, commercials, industrial films, and much more. 70% of the work here is for spokesperson roles. Why not tap into it by learning the skills on how to host a TV segment or promote a product/service?

This class will provide insight into the industry, and help you develop your own on-camera personality and interview technique. Learn the methods of reading from a teleprompter (most acting jobs today require this skill). Find out how to earn a living in the entertainment industry by just being yourself and developing your own style.

BONUS!

Class will also be taught how to download teleprompter software and shown user-friendly access tips.

Testimonials!

I just wanted to extend a HUGE thank you to Kathy Wickline Casting and their phenomenal instructor, Dave Thomas. I have applied what I learned to land a lead in an industrial video just recently! I was completely prepared and managed to make a great impression on the producer and director, as well as the client! Your support and instruction definitely came into play that day...THANK YOU SO MUCH!  Olyvia Bollin

I was looking to fill the holes in my performances, and be competent as well as passionate. I didn’t understand why I had such a hard time in auditions. After taking Dave’s class, I understand how to hit words and bring a script to life. I would recommend this class to an actor looking to take their career to the next level.  Alice Wills

Dave’s Spokesperson Class prepares you for your next casting call. You will rise to a higher level and he will make sure you know what to expect and prepare for it. Thank you Dave for another informative and engaging class, and although you presented us with every possible scenario we could encounter, you did it in such a way that made it fun, enjoyable and not overwhelming.  Mark Smith

This 2-session virtual workshop will introduce the beginning actor, or the theater actor who is making the transition to the on-camera industry, to critical techniques required when auditioning in a virtual/self-submit environment or an in-person studio environment.   Utilizing a variety of scripts from past auditions, participants will work in front of the camera each session to improve their ‘cold-read’ skills while learning how to work with directors and casting directors effectively.  In each exercise, participants will learn tricks of top bookers and how to avoid the bad habits that knock an actor out of the running at an audition.

This workshop is jam-packed with valuable information and tools that will prepare the actor for a professional audition setting. While being fun and informative, this workshop also boasts a very supportive setting in a small class environment.

INTRO TO MODELING
For Teens to Adults

Intro to Print modeling.png

INSTRUCTOR: Roe Lennon of AMA

PLATFORM: Zoom

FEE: $59 (+ $20 Admin Fee)

DATE:  Monday, February, 21st

TIME: 4pm - approx. 5:30/6pm

AGE: 12+ Parent/guardian of minor (under 18) must attend

About This Class

This is the perfect seminar for aspiring models, as well as actors looking to expand their work to include lifestyle (real people), fashion, and ad casting. There is an increasing demand for actors and non traditional "model" body types in advertising now, and modeling can be a lucrative field.

Most projects have to do with a look, and most often that look is seeking ‘real’ people. Many with no background in the business have found very successful careers (career seeking/part-time) as commercial models. This type of modeling is fun and can be an exciting field to get into.

We'll discuss:

  • Types of work available, from fashion to commercial lifestyle work

  • Marketing materials - What you need to get started

  • Basics of the biz

  • Going rates that models are paid

  • How to get an agent/freelance

  • Industry standards to ensure a confident and educated beginning to an exciting new career path

This is an excellent opportunity to learn from one of the top modeling/talent agencies in Philadelphia!

I thoroughly enjoyed Roe’s class.  She was informative, entertaining, and encouraging, which was all very valuable for someone who is relatively new to the industry. I took lots of notes and have already referenced them!

                                                                                                                                                                 - Linda M.

Intro to Print Modeling was absolutely amazing.  I wasn't too sure about getting into print modeling or what the seminar would be like, but after the class I left feeling so inspired and ready to prepare myself to take the next steps of getting into the business.

                                                                                                                                                                 - Aliyah M.
